THE MUSEUM
Inside the castle of Valfabbrica, the church of Saint Sebastian was built as a castle chapel in the Middle Ages. Later it became an oratory, then in the 16th century it was remade to host the brotherhoods of Eucharist and of the Good Death. Inside, it was expanded and it is now divided into three aisles; it underwent radical transformations in the 1700s when five baroque altars were added. The main altar is artistically notable, with its Crucifixion from the 1600s. Also interesting is the one of Mary of the Rosary, with the painting from early 1900s by an unknown artist that recalls the central section of the Pala di Santa Maria dei Fossi by Pinturicchio, displayed in the National Gallery of Umbria. The opposite altar has a Holy Family by Benedetto Bandiera, a painter from Perugia close to Federico Barocci, whose daughter Chiara followed her father in his artistic career in the 17th century. From 2023 the church of Saint Sebastian is also a Civic Museum of the same name. It displays a varied collection of civic and ecclesiastic exhibits, as well as documents that tell the story of local culture. The Museum enhances all the decorative elements inside the Church and leads visitors to discover the city; it is the perfect starting point to discover the territory as well.
