Temporary Exhibition MASTER HANDS
From the discovery of a series of stucco artifacts from the mid-18th century, on the edges of which the fingerprints of the artisans who created them are still recognizable, the idea that inspires this project is born: to create an archive of plaster casts that collects and records the details and experiences of the hands of the artisans and master artists of our time, to fix them in the here and now and hand them down to future memory.
Why dedicating oneself to this idea?
We immediately realized that there was a great desire for participation on the part of artisans and artists, almost as if to strongly emphasize the need to return to being protagonists and feeling part of the same story.
The artistic response we found is in the “gripped hands”, plaster casts where the construction system is visible symbolizing that hands, through work and gestures, can create relationships, communities, identities. It is an ode to a new Humanism, capable of bringing back to the centre of the dialogue the value of the time of doing, which is above all a happy time.
And what place could be more symbolic and perfect than the Palazzo dei Consoli, where the meeting between our city’s history, the people who preserve the know-how of our time, and the tradition that opens up to the future can take place? It is a vocation already safeguarded in the inscription on the architrave: “STRUX(IT) ET I(M)MENSIS”, literally a man-made artifact facing the immense, made by hand for infinity.
It is the vocation of Gubbio: city of Master Hands.
